Forehead wrinkles bothering you? Here's what you can do about it.

Forehead wrinkles bothering you?

What are wrinkles?

Folds, creases, or ridges in the skin that appear naturally with age are called wrinkles. The first few wrinkles appear in the areas where the skin naturally folds while holding facial expression. They develop when the skin becomes less elastic and thinner over time. Wrinkles can appear on the parts that receive the maximum sun exposure, such as the face, hands, arms, and neck.

Today, we will be talking about forehead wrinkles, which is a part of growing older. This article looks at what causes forehead wrinkles, the lifestyle changes one could make to reduce them, and some effective cosmetics that minimize their appearance.

What causes forehead wrinkles?

The action of the forehead's frontalis muscle causes forehead wrinkles. When we raise our eyebrows, the muscle contracts. Due to this, the forehead's skin is pulled up, which causes lines to appear on the forehead called forehead wrinkles.

Some of the factors that lead to the development of forehead wrinkles are:

  • exposure to the sun
  • smoking
  • dehydration
  • certain medications
  • genetic and environmental factors

Exposure to ultraviolet rays from tanning booths, sunbathing, and outdoor sports can increase forehead wrinkles' development. The UV rays break down the collagen & elastin fibers of the skin. When this layer breaks, the skin becomes less elastic, causing wrinkles to appear. Regular smoking fastens the aging process of the skin as it decreases blood supply. Alcohol, too, dries the skin making it more susceptible to wrinkles. Sometimes excessive frowning may be the cause of your forehead wrinkles again.

You may feel that the next most convenient step is to cover those winkles with a new haircut like bangs. However, before you rush to the stylist, make a note of the below Minimalist tips that may help reduce your forehead changes' appearance.

Lifestyle changes that can reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles

Most people don't realize this, but your lifestyle can significantly impact the way your skin looks and feels. This includes the development and appearance of forehead wrinkles. Check out these tips to prevent premature aging and keep your skin soft and supple.

Avoid sun exposure

Being out in the scorching sun for too long can get you exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause wrinkles and premature aging.

Manage stress

When you worry, you end up wrinkling your brow, which leads to forehead wrinkles. Although it is hard to get rid of all your stress, considering the hectic lives we live today, you can try to keep it under control with the following methods.

  • practicing yoga
  • aromatherapy
  • journaling
  • exercising daily
  • meditating
  • diaphragmatic breathing
  • eating a healthy diet
  • talking to a therapist

Stay hydrated

If your skin is dry, wrinkles become more prominent. Keeping your skin well hydrated diminishes the appearance of forehead wrinkles. So, it is essential to hydrate your body, not just with cosmetics from the outside, but water from the inside.

Make sure you drink at minimum eight (8) glasses of water a day to keep yourself hydrated. Make sure to sip on some more when you spend time in the sun or exercise. Although it's best to have plain water, you can change up the flavor with a fruit infuser or add lemon if you are not too fond of it.

Eat a balanced diet

Wrinkles or no, you must always consume a healthy diet to maintain good health. There is a famous saying that "you are what you eat". When it comes to wrinkles, it is most definitely true. According to a 2007 study, the diet you consume plays a significant role in skin ages. The research showed that a higher intake of Vitamin C and linolenic acid, an omega-three fatty acid, decreased the risk of dry skin among middle-aged American women. Vitamin C was also linked to reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Moreover, a diet that is rich in carbs and fats makes the skin less prone to wrinkles.

Stop smoking

An increased risk of emphysema, lung cancer, and heart disease must be enough to make most people quit smoking. However, it isn't enough for you. Maybe the thought of wrinkles and premature aging would. Smoking is one of the leading causes of wrinkles and premature aging.

As per 2008 research, the chemicals present in tobacco smoke can reduce collagen production and ruin the skin's elasticity. It can lead to wrinkles & premature aging.

Cosmetics can help minimize forehead lines.

Many cosmetic brands claim that their products can get rid of forehead wrinkles. However, many of these don't do much good. Nevertheless, some are popular for producing outstanding results, such as:

Products with retinol

Retinol is a milder form of tretinoin, which is a prescription based vitamin A. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved tretinoin to treat acne and wrinkles. Retinol also helps to increase collagen production and cell turnover. However, note that it doesn't go well with sunlight, so it would be best to use it overnight and always apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or more during the day.

Exfoliating products with glycolic acid

An alpha hydroxy acid that can provide healthier, younger-looking skin when used as an exfoliator, glycolic acid is the main ingredient in most chemical peels. You may also find it in over the counter, leave-on exfoliants. It's also in some leave-on, over-the-counter exfoliants. However, make sure to use sunscreen after using glycolic acid products.

You must have heard of a paint primer that prepares the area before painting. In the same way, a face primer prepares your skin for makeup like foundation. Although it won't necessarily get rid of forehead wrinkles, it can reduce their appearance before putting on makeup. Without primer, the foundation may sometimes get accumulated in your forehead lines, making them more visible. A primer is relatively inexpensive and comes in the form of gels, creams, and powder. It helps to "smoothen" wrinkles skin and can allow the foundation to stay longer throughout the day.

If you are not scared of needles, you may try a hand at botox. They are injections that help fight off forehead wrinkles. Botox is a medication made out of botulinum toxin. When it is injected into some muscles, it temporarily paralyzes them not to contract further. In simple words, once you get a botox done, when you frown, your forehead won't wrinkle.

However, they aren't for everyone as they come with a price and can have some side effects such as:

  • swelling, pain, or bruising at the site where the injection was given
  • flu-like symptoms
  • dry eye
  • headache

We, as humans, are always in a battle to reduce aging. However, there is not much substantial evidence based on products that minimize forehead wrinkles. Although personal accounts exist, these are not reliable.

In a few or some cases, it may be hard to get rid of forehead wrinkles entirely. However, the steps we mentioned above can certainly make them less noticeable. For starters, maintain a healthy diet, avoid excessive sun exposure, apply SPF 30 or more, exercise regularly, and manage stress. Following these will keep your body and skin healthy.
